ABSTRACT

Physicians, after completing their studies in medical school, begin a 5-year training period, known as a residency, to become expert physicians in their eld. During the residency period, residents work long, consecutive hours including night shifts in which they have only a few hours of sleep. Therefore, residency is considered a dif-cult and stressful period that is challenging both physically and mentally. However, the long working hours are part of the traditional method of training young physicians and are seen as essential to their learning process.
