ABSTRACT

The ability to use technology and tools for the betterment of humankind is the hallmark differentiating our species from all others on the planet. In the development of tools for use in the treatment of disease, very little is truly unique. Medical products, or devices, typically are the combination of existing technologies, brought together to solve specic clinical unmet needs. Lasers are an excellent example of a technology that has been adapted for medical use in order to solve a variety of medical problems (Figure 6.1). Laser energy is efcient and controllable and can be transmitted through tiny optical bers, making it an ideal energy source for use with catheterbased devices (Figure 6.2).
