ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the evolution of human efforts to alter the vast, pulsing water and landscape known as the Everglades. It describes the pattern of construction and the regulation schedules that govern control of water in the Water Conserva tion Areas and the eastern boundary of Everglades National Park. The Water Conservation Areas are spatially and functionally central to water management in the Everglades. They are also the most viable candidates for ecological revitaliza tion, with the potential to provide substantial downstream benefits to Everglades National Park, including Florida Bay.
