Causes of heat loss During anaesthesia, thermoregulation is impaired and patients are subjected to many thermal stresses. These are due to: • transfer to theatre • a cold environment • exposure of skin • open body cavities • cold preparation solutions • irrigation fluids • blood • intravenous fluids • dry inspired gas • transfer to the recovery area.
