ABSTRACT
The first rib is the key to the important neurovascular relationships of this region. It is unique in being the shortest, flattest and most curvaceous of the ribs. Its extreme flattening and curvature gives it broad upper and lower surfaces and sharp outer and inner margins, the latter bearing the scalene tubercle or the tubercle of Lisfranc.
