ABSTRACT

The oesophagus has its origin at the laryngopharynx at the level of C6. It is a tubular structure about 25cm long which is continuous above with the laryngeal part of the pharynx opposite C6. It passes through the diaphragm at the level of T10 to join the stomach, and conveys masticated enteral nutrients from the mouth to the rest of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It terminates at the stomach 1.3cm below the diaphragm.
