ABSTRACT
Transfer of critically ill patients is indicated if there is a need for additional care not available at the patient’s current location. Recommendations of the Intensive Care Society and the British Paediatric Association to centralise intensive care services in regional units will make inter-hospital transfer more common.There is evidence that the number of adult transfers between general, neurosurgical and cardiac units in the UK exceeds 11000 per annum.
