ABSTRACT

This is a life-threatening situation and assessment, diagnosis and management need to proceed urgently and simultaneously. Fits range from partial to generalised and may not be sustained.

First actions The priority is to prevent the woman injuring herself, so avoid manipulating her airway until the fit is over. If the fit is ongoing, use an anticonvulsant – diazepam 10mg IV – as soon as possible. Put her in the left lateral position with head down. Give high-flow oxygen via a facemask.
