ABSTRACT

Issues surrounding patient safety come in various forms. In this section we have tried to collate specific examples of where what we do as surgeons, on a day-to-day basis, places patients most at risk of harm. However, it is also worth remembering that anything we do as surgeons can impact on a patient’s safety – so every time a patient is taken to theatre they are at risk! It is also necessary to appreciate that the safety of the surgeon and hospital staff is equally as important, and this will be touched upon here and during the exam.
