ABSTRACT

The CEM curriculum highlights a small number of topics under the title ‘Infectious diseases’, but it is easy to see that knowledge and management of a wider number of potential scenarios may be examined under this banner. These may include the following:

• Malaria • Tuberculosis • HIV and AIDS • Meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia • Pneumonia • Sepsis • Pyrexia of unknown origin • Fever in the returning traveller • Needlestick injury • The febrile child • Kawasaki’s disease

This station is an invitation to demonstrate your knowledge of the management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the emergency department. The British Thoracic Society (BTS) publishes detailed and widely applied guidelines for the management of CAP, and these should be at the forefront of your mind when listening to the history and examination findings presented by the F2.
