ABSTRACT

Medicolegal issues are never far even from routine clinical practice in the emergency department, but there are a number of areas where it is at the forefront of decision making. This chapter adopts a different format from the rest of the book and aims to provide key information to enable the trainee to understand the often complicated scenarios with medicolegal implications that arise in emergency departments. Difficult decisions with medicolegal implications should be made at a senior level, and may require specialist advice from both the medical and legal spheres. You are reminded that the defence unions are available round the clock for advice.
