Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is an important fruit crop grown in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Described as a large, fast-growing, arborescent herb, papaya is cultivated for its climacteric, melon-like fruit. It is one of the few plant species that bears fruit continuously throughout the year within months of planting and is commonly found in small backyard gardens for household consumption and organized commercial plantings for domestic markets and export (Chan and Paull 2009).
