ABSTRACT

We can’t see microorganisms but they are all around us, in air, water, soil, food, on dishcloths and chopping boards, as well as on human skin. In Chapter 2, we’ve seen how microscopes can be used to visualize these tiny creatures so that we can study their anatomy more closely. But microscopy is suitable only if large numbers of microbes are present and they are not hidden from view by bigger particles. Thus, inspecting samples of food or soil directly under the microscope is unlikely to reward us with clear images of all the microorganisms within them.
