ABSTRACT
Local infiltrative anaesthesia is suitable for superficial surgery in the neck. General anaesthesia with a laryngeal mask is appropriate for most procedures but longer operations or procedures requiring movement of the head are safer performed with endotrachael intubation. Cervical plexus blocks have proved to be both a safe and effective alternative to general anaesthesia for carotid endarterectomy.
