The number of medical journals available to clinicians and researchers in the UK is large and increases every month as new journals are published for the fi rst time. Some journals are universally agreed to be of high quality such as The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. However, for the vast majority of journals it can be diffi cult to assess their comparative importance, especially when they have similar titles, e.g. the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology and Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology. Another example is when looking at region-specifi c titles, e.g. is it more prestigious to publish your case study in the South African Medical Journal or the Medical Journal of Australia?
