The majority of students starting medical school will have little idea as to what fi eld they will eventually pursue. Even for those who do, the choice often changes over time. A student ambitious enough to want a career as an internationally renowned heart surgeon may end their foundation years dreaming of becoming a GP in a small village and vice versa. However, as most students progress through medical school they start to have some idea of the type of career and lifestyle that is available to them.
