ABSTRACT

Tricuspid valve disease affects 0.8% of the general population. Its prevalence is higher in patients with heart failure, where approximately 35% have moderate or severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR), and this is associated with reduced long-term survival.1,2 The most common cause of TR is functional TR due to left-sided valvular heart disease. About 30% of patients with severe mitral regurgitation have signi cant TR and up to 50% of patients undergoing mitral valve surgery have associated TR.2 Primary disease of the tricuspid valve is less common and is due to rheumatic disease, degenerative disease, endocarditis, carcinoid, endomyocardial brosis, radiation therapy, trauma, and congenital abnormalities, amongst others.
