ABSTRACT

About the chapter This chapter covers one of the most important aspects of macroergonomics-the management of occupational safety and health. The chapter begins by presenting a brief history of workplace safety and health issues, including the evolution of legal responsibilities of the employer. Attention then shifts to important elements of occupational safety and health, including methods of classifying causes of injury, illness, and accident prevention. Next, contemporary methods for managing occupational safety and health are discussed. These methods are primarily instituted through a workplace safety program, which carries out activities such as ensuring compliance with safety and health standards, accident and illness reporting and monitoring, identification and management of workplace hazards, and administering methods of hazard control.
