ABSTRACT

Embankment on soft soil is an important infrastructure for transportation purposes (roads and railways) and for water management (dikes and levees). For example, more than 40% of the road network worldwide and almost 90% of the road network in South America consists of unpaved roads of which many are built on embankments (nationmaster.com). Embankment failures typically go with large economic damages and go sometimes also with loss of human lives. For construction of new embankments and maintenance of existing embankments a proper understanding of the site characteristics is important.
