The industrial sector in the United States is highly diverse-consisting of manufacturing, mining,agriculture,andconstructionactivities-andconsumesone-thirdofthenation’s primaryenergyuse,atanannualcostofaround$200billion.1 The industrial sector encompassesmorethanthreemillionestablishmentsengagedinmanufacturing,agriculture, forestry,construction,andmining.Theseindustriesrequireenergytolight,heat,cool,and ventilatefacilities(endusescharacterizedasenergyneededforcomfort).Theyalsouse energytoharvestcrops,processlivestock,drillandextractminerals,powervariousmanufacturing processes, move equipment and material, raise steam, and generate electricity. Someindustriesrequireadditionalenergyfuelsforuseasrawmaterials-orfeedstocksintheirproductionprocesses.Manyindustriesuseby-productfuelstosatisfypartormost oftheirenergyrequirements.Inthemoreenergy-intensivemanufacturingandnonmanufacturing industries, energy used by processes dwarfs the energy demand for comfort.
