ABSTRACT

As we have seen thus far, pollution of the ambient atmosphere is an enormous environmental concern. As a consequence, regulatory measures have been implemented to safeguard public health, protect air quality in pristine air regions, regulate or ban ozone (O3)-destroying chemicals, and reduce acidic deposition; measures are being contemplated and debated to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to mitigate the anticipated adverse consequences of global warming. The primary focus of air pollution control activities on a day-to-day basis is to protect public health. In the more than four decades that have passed, these health-based pollution control efforts have required an investment of several trillion dollars.
