Heterogeneous catalysts play a major role in the chemical and petrochemical industry. At the end of the twentieth century, it was estimated that 90% of all chemical processes rely or are based on catalysis [1]. Three common classes of heterogeneous catalysts used in industrial processes are differentiated as follows [2]:
