ABSTRACT
History A 63-year-old man is lifting boxes at home when he experiences the sudden onset of lower back pain. The pain is so severe that he is unable to move and consequently calls an ambulance. Upon admission to accident and emergency he describes the pain as sharp and radiating down his legs, more severe on the left.
