ABSTRACT

An accelerated laboratory corrosion study was performed based on ASTM G 109-92. The focus of this portion of the project was to develop practical and reliable guidelines for the production of concrete mixtures with low permeability and increased resistance to corrosion. Figure 1 shows the laboratory specimens stored in the University of Hawaii (UH) structures laboratory basement. A single ASTM G 109 cycle consists of ponding for two weeks with a 3% NaCl solution, and drying for two weeks. A total of 656 individual specimens representing 100 different concrete mixtures were included in the accelerated laboratory corrosion study. Ponding cycles initiated between 1999 and 2001. At the time of writing this paper, over 200 of these specimens have not shown signs of corrosion and are still being subjected to ponding cycles in the laboratory.
