ABSTRACT

Beam CB1 failed at an ultimate load of 68 kN in conventional ductile flexure mode with yielding of the main reinforcing steel. Beam PB1S, strengthened by externally bonded CFRP strips with full depth anchors at the ends and at midspan, failed in desirable flexure mode by yielding of steel followed by crushing of concrete and carried an additional 33 kN prior to failure (32% increase in load carrying capacity).
