ABSTRACT

We may think of man-made systems as solutions to problems. At the rst instance when we become aware of a problem that ends up being solved by a man-made system, we know relatively little about the problem and its solution. In order to solve the problem, we must accumulate information related to it, apply appropriate knowledge and thinking to this information, and make decisions about choices exposed. If the problem is simple, one person unaided may be able to apply their own knowledge to evolve a solution focused on a particular system synthesis. If the problem is complex, it will be impossible for any one person to solve it because of a knowledge decit problem explained in the previous chapter. The solution of a complex problem will require two or more people, each with different specialized knowledge that collectively covers the complete knowledge space needed for the solution.
