ABSTRACT

When we develop unprecedented product systems, we should begin work from the grandest vision of the system description, the customer need. The reason for this is that it is the way users of systems become aware that they are not currently capable of satisfying some unfullled need. We commonly do not think of the details and then synthesize them into a whole. No, we start with a grand vision and expand the details working from the known toward the unknown, from the simple to the complex. The customer need is a simple statement telling what must be accomplished by some system yet to be determined. Through a structured analysis process, we can expose increasingly greater detail about the system to be, reaching an understanding of the problem to be solved captured in specications.
