ABSTRACT

Infrared thermal imaging has been used in medicine since the early 1960s. Working groups within the European Thermographic Association (now European Association of Thermology) produced the first publications on standardization of thermal imaging in 1978 [1] and 1979 [2]. However, Collins and Ring established already in 1974 a quantitative thermal index [3], which was modified in Germany by J.-M. Engel in 1978 [4]. Both indices opened the field of quantitative evaluation of medical thermography.
