ABSTRACT

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has, over the years, acquired an important role for patient monitoring in the operating room and the intensive care unit (ICU). Management of lung transplantation recipients requires extensive monitoring, as hemodynamic and ventilatory changes during and after surgery can be critical and precipitous. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) have published guidelines for the use of perioperative TEE (1) in thoracic surgery, which are summarized in Table 27.1.
