7.1 INTRODUCTION

Nutraceutical, a combination of “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical,” refers to extracts of foods claimed to have a medicinal effect on human health. Nutraceuticals are usually contained in a medicinal format such as a capsule, tablet, or powder and administered in a prescribed dose. More rigorously, nutraceutical implies that the extract or food is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease. Functional foods are defined as being consumed as part of the usual diet but are demonstrated to have physiological benefits and reduce the risk of chronic disease beyond basic nutritional functions. Examples of some nutraceuticals are flavonoids, antioxidants, α-linolenic acid from flax seeds, β-carotene from marigold petals, and anthocyanins from berries (Karla 2003).
