ABSTRACT

Leadership and power in project management are inextricably intertwined. A leader is “someone who occupies a position in a group, influences others in accordance with the role expectation of the position and co-ordinates and directs the group in maintaining itself and reaching its goal.” Leadership and poise are inextricably intertwined, and in the conclusion of the leadership section, leadership is situational. There are two types of power people can have, positional and personal. Positional power, also known as “formal” power, is power that can be granted by an organization. “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In an effort to limit the “corruption,” or at least spread the power to have some checks and balances, organizations will use a matrixed structure. In conclusion, “Leadership thus implies something more than a mere supervisory responsibility or formal authority.
