ABSTRACT

This chapter examines project scope management. It analyzes definitions of goals and objectives, scope, general requirements, system context, use of external resources, and major constraints. Ideas for projects can originate from virtually anyone or anyplace. Once an idea has been formalized, deemed feasible, and approved by the managers of the organization, a project plan should be created. The plan will detail the scope, resources, cost estimates, and schedule for the project. Project goals are always subsets of business goals. In a project plan, one or more project goals are described and tied back to the business goals of the organization. The goal of each standard is to provide a set of benchmarks, enabling the project team to complete the task and be assured that it meets at least a minimum level of quality. The project plan will usually determine the cost, resources, and time requirements for the proposed project.
