ABSTRACT

The Japanese government has been evaluating the possibility of enhancing ‚sheries production for food ‚sh in the Japanese coastal region during the past quarter of a century. This has resulted in further promotion of arti‚cial seamount (reef) development. There are several engineering issues that need to be resolved in order to continue to construct arti‚cial seamounts on the continental shelf at deeper areas and at a larger scale. Based on our summary of engineering researches and developments, basic technological ideas are needed. This chapter summarizes the results of current engineering modeling studies and technical developments needed for future actions toward the improvement of the nearshore Japanese ‚sheries.
