ABSTRACT
Laboratory investigations are not routinely needed, but with appropriate suspicion physicians should order screening tests to detect iron deficiency, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmune disease ( Table 3-2 ). Microscopic evaluation of the hair shaft can provide a rapid diagnosis of hair shaft abnormalities, although random isolated hair shaft abnormalities are seen in normal individuals ( 10 ).
