ABSTRACT

The lighting of traffic routes is designed primarily for the driver. But drivers are not the only users of the streets at night, people on foot are also likely to be about, and they benefit from some lighting. What form this lighting should take is given in national standards (BSI, 2003), guidance documents (CIE, 2010c) and books (Leslie and Rodgers, 1996; ILE, 2005). Lighting for pedestrian use at night is provided on residential roads and in car parks, where there are likely to be vehicles moving close by, and in pedestrianized areas and public parks, where there are not.
