ABSTRACT
This chapter gives a brief overview of the natural world and its classication, focussing on the organisms that are the richest sources of natural products, and with reference to the organisation of data in the Dictionary of Natural Products (DNP). The main groups of microorganisms, plants, animals and fungi are briey reviewed.
