ABSTRACT

The general precautions and advice for handling chemicals in a laboratory environment are also relevant to natural product research. In addition, two particular groups of hazard need to be recognised during the isolation, manipulation and biological testing of natural products: hazards resulting from the acute toxicological and pharmacological properties of some classes of natural products and hazards associated with the use of organic solvents. Toxins exemplify the hazards of working with natural products of high acute oral toxicity, and hazard information for some selected toxins is tabulated in Section 8.4. The re and health hazards associated with handling organic solvents used to extract natural products are summarised in Section 8.5.
