ABSTRACT

The neurologist often has a key role in the evaluation and management of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), especially during the emergent and acute phases of care delivery. As rehabilitation commences, the neurologist may be involved as a consultant or may play a more active role overseeing the rehabilitation process, depending on the nature of his or her practice and the degree to which physiatric services are available. The role of the neurologist in the rehabilitation of the patient with TBI includes de ning the extent of neurologic damage, reviewing pharmacologic issues as they affect central nervous function, identifying and managing neurologic complications such as posttraumatic seizures, and presenting information in a manner that is of maximal use to allied health professionals, family members, and the patient. This chapter provides a review of the neurologic examination, which will foster effective interaction between the neurologist and other rehabilitation professionals.
