ABSTRACT

The task of identifying instruments is performed with relative ease by human listeners with some training. Even untrained listeners can succeed in discriminating different classes of instruments. The emulation of those human abilities has been one of the main fields of research in digital audio, and many techniques have been proposed in the last decade. This chapter presents an overview of this important area of research, focusing on the main problems posed by the subject and describing some of the solutions proposed in the literature.
