ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, we examined the dierent modes of batch distillation operation. The theoretical analysis and a graphical approach based on simplied assumptions were developed for the dierent operating modes, and the approach was illustrated using binary systems. This chapter presents a rigorous analysis of the batch distillation column. It begins with a description of the dynamics of the column in terms of dierential mass and energy balances. This is followed by a general discussion on numerical integration techniques. Finally, the errors and stability issues of the governing equations are analyzed, solution techniques in the context of batch column dynamics are outlined, and a few simulation examples are given.
