ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with reviewing selected basic but important statistical concepts. It also discusses some common misunderstandings about basic statistics. The most exciting part of a soccer game is probably the scoring of goals. However, only a tiny fraction of the time is actually spent on scoring. The players spend most of the 90 minutes trying to organize the attacks. Without such organization, there could be no scoring. Statistical analysis is analogous to scoring goals. Good practice in data organizing and statistical programming is analogous to the organizing of the attacks. The remaining part of the chapter is devoted to these issues.
