ABSTRACT

We saw that the Higgs mechanism is an essential part of the standard model. is mechanism is needed because of a contradiction between two features: the initial theoretical desire to have a gauge theory, leading to massless fermions and gauge bosons, on the one hand; and the wellknown experimental fact that electrons and other fermions have mass, the same holding for the weak gauge bosons, on the other hand. e Higgs is related to the problem of mass; it was invented in order to give mass to both the gauge bosons and the fermions.
