ABSTRACT
In 1911, Victor Hess discovered cosmic rays (CRs) quite unexpectedly. This was in the years after the discovery of radioactivity when all aspects of radiation were being studied. Becquerel had invented a method of detecting radiation by observing the rate at which an electroscope would discharge. Using this method, a general background radiation was discovered.
