Using Life Cycle Assessment to Evaluate the Environmental Performance of Bio-Based Materials

Bio-based materials comprise a large and heterogeneous group of materials produced partially or fully from biomass. Bio-based materials include conventional wood, paper, and textile products as well as novel chemicals, resins, lubricants, and composites. The manufacturing processes of bio-based materials are as versatile as the group of materials ranging from extraction and simple mechanical processing of naturally occurring polymers to fermentation and advanced enzymatic or catalytic conversions (Figure 8.1).
