ABSTRACT

Sustainable industrial development requires a balance between economic, technological, and environmental aspects. In particular, the development of cleaner and renewable technologies as well as fundamental to process optimization, waste reduction, and pollution prevention are becoming imperative for developing countries, such as Latin American transition-economies countries. The use of renewable resources in chemical industry represents also an opportunity of the growth for agricultural productions, while reducing the impact of oil-based processes on the environment. However, Latin American countries encounter signi—cant dif—culties in the transition toward market economy, which are in part related to the presence of old and environmentally non-friendly technologies.
