ABSTRACT

E. Lemoine, a French mathematician, defined geometrography as a measure of the simplicity of constructions using ruler and compass (see, e.g., [Mackay 93]). His measure allows one to compare different constructions done with ruler and compass, and such an approach could certainly be generalized to other tools. However, I feel that proceeding in this way, one mixes information. From the point of view that it is clearer to separate different aspects of a construction, I have defined new measures to characterize constructions. However, the definition of these measures needs a formalization of the mathematical concepts of tool and construction.
