ABSTRACT

Before reviewing methyl bromide (MB) alternatives in general and nonchemical alternatives in particular in dates’ production and processing sector, it is of importance to shed light on current status of world dates production, the Montreal Protocol (MP) on the substances that deplete the ozone layer (a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer) and the impact of related decisions on the use of MB and its alternatives for disinfestation of dates. This is to link the national, regional, and international compliance requirements of this treaty and the requirements for developing and improving the dates industry.
