ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to research on goal setting and goal orientation within the German rehabilitation system. It is one of the peculiarities of German rehabilitation practice and rehabilitation research that it is hardly visible on an international level. This is presumably due to atypical approaches to rehabilitation that often do not conform to other countries’ approaches or standards and result primarily in German language publications. Therefore, first of all we will describe the central features of the German rehabilitation system as well as outlining German rehabilitation research traditions that have evolved since the 1990s. This includes the introduction of a rehabilitation guideline related to goal setting. Thereafter, the results of German rehabilitation research will be presented and discussed.
