ABSTRACT

The concept of self-management is not necessarily new, and successful strategies used by individuals living with long-term conditions to manage their daily lives have been described and studied for decades (Taylor & Bury, 2007). Self-management in the context of healthcare has largely been associated with separate programmes organized and provided in addition to other care. Promotion of active self-management through rehabilitation has not previously received much attention. It is timely to review current evidence relating to self-management and how it could be utilized within rehabilitation.
