The study of the dynamics of networks of neurons has a long and rich history. The rst investigation of network dynamics considered networks of binary elements (McCulloch and Pitts 1943, Marr 1969, 1970, 1971), or simple mathematical models of populations of neurons in which variables represent the activity of whole populations of neurons (called neural eld, neural mass, or rate models) (Beurle 1956, Grifth 1963, Wilson and Cowan 1972, 1973, Amari 1977).
